Focal length- Technique
By adjusting the focal length of your camera you can alter the subjects size in the final image.
Focal Length- the distance between the centre of a lens or the curved mirror and its focus.
Field of View- What can be seen. This is determined by the angle of view from the lens to the scene. It can be measured either horizontally or vertically.
Wide Angle- Involves having a short focal length and therefore a field covering a wide angle.
Standard Lens- A camera lens with a focal length which is around equal to the diagonal of the negative. This will give a field of view which is similar to real life for the naked eye. In 35mm photography, lenses with a focal length of 50mm are seen as normal as they work without reducing or magnifying.

Animation- Work diary
Camera settings
Aperture: F9 (a slightly higher depth of field was required in order to gain an image with a better tonal balance).
Shutter speed: 1/200 (faster shutter speeds prevent blurring which is essential in close up images).
ISO: 200 (studio lighting only requires a low ISO).
Lighting
-Soft box x2 (a soft box was used on either side if the subject in the studio in order to provide an even tone of lighting).
-Natural lighting.

Location
-Photography studio.
-Harlow town park.

Equipment
-Tripod/camera stand (to reduce camera shake).
-Nikon D5300, standard lens (wide angle and macro photography were not required for the park shoot).
-College studio camera and macro lens (the best macro effect can only be achieved with a specialised lens to gain a more detailed image).
-Graphics tablet (this was used to draw the stars onto the eye in the editing process).

Shoot objective/obstacles
The objective of this project was to use images in my existing portfolio to create GIFs. I had slight issues with finding images which I wished to make into GIFs however the ones which I have found I am happy with. I feel that a GIF or stop motion animation could be used effectively in an advertorial project.
This is my favourite animation because I like the rough style of drawing which I have achieved using a graphics tablet. The images decreased saturation and increased contrast also give it an interesting appearance and make the image appear much more crisp an effect which is amplified by the use of the sharpening tool in order to create a more defined line on the objects eyeliner.
Least favourite animation
This is my least favourite image due to the way that the image jumps as a result of it not being layered correctly in photoshop. This effect could be implemented to create a jumpy effect for a horror image but was not correctly executed in this animation.
Inclusion of technique in project
I would like to incorporate a GIF into my project at some point even if it is just to document the process through which I will be applying the makeup for one of the shoots as this is a technique which interests me.
Focal length- Work diary
Camera settings
Aperture: F6.3 (this Fstop will allow for a wide depth of field and for the images background to be visible and clear).
Shutter speed: 1/100 (a slow shutter speed should be used in order to minimise the subject movement and resulting image distortion).
ISO: 100 (a low ISO should be used in order to create a crisp image).
Lighting
-Natural light.
Location
-Harlow college.
Equipment
-Tripod (in order to reduce camera shake).
-Nikon D5300, standard lens (no specialist lens was required).
Shoot objective/obstacles
The objective of this shoot was to use a variety of focal length to create a series of images of the same subject with a variety of zoom applied to each image. Obstacles which I found when attempting to create this shoot include struggling to maintain the same framing for each shot t combat this I used a tripod to steady the camera.
This is my favourite image due to the fact that the focal length used allows for the images background as well as the subject to be in focus. This style of photography would be suitable for a fashion poster or a CD cover due to the images aesthetic. I have also reduced the images saturation as well as increasing it's contrast to give a slightly darker appearance.
Least favourite image
This is my least favourite image due to the fact that image has an extreme wide angle which means that the subject is difficult to see. The fact that the subject is dressed in such a dark outfit also creates an element of difficulty in distinguishing between the images background and subject. I also feel that the fact that the buildings are visible in the background of the image gives it a harsh appearance.
Inclusion in my project
I may implement this technique in my project in order to gain a varied selection of shots in each shoot.

Wide angle close up- Work diary
Camera settings
Aperture: F5.6 (or lower for shallow depth of field as this will draw the viewers eye to the images subject).
ISO: 400 (dependent on lighting)
Shutter speed: 1/125 (a fast shutter speed will prevent the image from becoming distorted due to subject movement).
Lighting set up
-Natural lighting.
Equipment
-Tripod (to prevent image distortion as a result of camera shake).
-Nikon D5300 standard lens (a wider lens would have been preferable in order to better demonstrate the wide angle distorted effect).
Shoot objecties/obstacles
The objective of this shoot was to capture the distortion of the face which can be obtained through the use of a wide angle lens. I feel that the image would have been more successful if I had of had access to a lens with a wider angle.
This is my favourite image from this topic due to the way that to accurately demonstrates the warping of the face which can occur from using a wide angle close up technique. This is achieved by the subjects close proximity to the camera. I also like the way that the shallow depth of field draws the viewers eye to the subject and effect which is further amplified by the images saturation.
Least favourite image
The aesthetic of this image achieved by the colouration and depth of field of the image is interesting to me as a result of the low Fstop which was used to create the photo and therefore I like the image however I feel that the image does not fit the topic of wide angle close up well due to the lack of warping which has occurred to the paper crane in the images foreground.
Inclusion in my project
This technique is not likely to be included in my project due to the fact that I do not feel that the distortion of the face will be suitable in the style of surreal fashion photography which I wish to achieve.
Macro- Work diary
Camera settings
Aperture: F9 (I increased the Fstop in order to gain a better level of image quality).
Shutter speed: 1/125 (a fast shutter speed will prevent camera shake and possible distortion of the image).
ISO: 200 (an ISO of 200 can be used due to the high levels of studio lighting).
Lighting
-Model light x2 (to add even lighting in the studio setting).
-Light diffuser (tracing paper issued in order to create an even tone in the image).
Location
-Photography studio.
Equipment
-Tripod (in order to reduce camera shake).
-Studio camera with macro lens (a macro lens is used in order to gain a higher level of detail in the image).
Shoot objective/obstacles
The objective of this shoot was to experiment with the use of macro photography. I have added a somewhat surreal aspect to the image and played on the ideas of forced silence and power through the incorporation of the black tape over the subjects mouth in my favourite image. I had issues trying to think of interesting ways to form the image as a result of the limited time which we had to compose the image.
This is my favourite image from the Macro shoot due to the surreal elements which it displays such as the black tape across the mouth of the subject. The tape conveys the idea of censorship and a lack of freedom whilst the subjects nose ring suggests a wish for freedom and the desire to move against society. I also feel like the low saturation of the image creates a cold feeling throughout the image which gives it a harsh feeling.
Least favourite image
This is my least favourite image due to the fact that it focuses on large area of the face and therefore does not implement the macro lens as effectively. I also feel that the composition of this image is weaker than that of the other images in my series. Another issue which I have with this image is the way that the bright lights and decreased saturation have given the subject a washed out and somewhat flat appearance.
Inclusion in my project
I will likely be including this technique in my project as I feel that it would help to capture the levels of detail in makeup for each shoot.
