Animation- Technical post

Dictionary definition- the technique of photographing successive drawings or positions of puppets or models to create an illusion of movement when the film is shown as a sequence.
Personal definition- creating the illusion of movement by using editing software to place images in sequence to create a video clip or GIF.

GIF- a lossless format for image files that supports both animated and static images.

Stop motion- a cinematographic technique whereby the camera is repeatedly stopped and started, for example to give animated figures the impression of movement.

Camera settings
Aperture: F6.3 (High f stop to provide wide depth of field).
ISO: 100 (Low ISO due to bright conditions).
Shutter speed: 1/100 (Fast shutter speed to prevent image distortion as a result of subject movement).

Lighting
-Natural lighting (If shot outside).

Equipment
-Tripod (to prevent camera shake and image distortion).

Focal length- Experimentation

Field of view- What can be seen (FOV determined by angle of view from lens).
Standard lens- 50 mm (Normal because works in standard way- works without reducing or magnifying and creates images the way we see the scene with our naked eyes).
Wide angle lens- Larger magnification.

Telephoto lens- Long photo length.

Sequence photography- Technical post

Dictionary definition- Sequence photography is a technique of shooting a series of images in where the subject is captured in successive motion. Sequence photography is a wonderful way of conveying motion in a static image.
Personal definition- A single image which captures an event from it's start to it's finish by compiling several images.

Explanation
To achieve the sequencing effect seen in many sports adverts and magazines a number of images are taken and then edited together in photoshop to create the illusion of there being more than one of the object present in the image. This technique demonstrates the passing of time as well as movement effectively.

Camera settings
Aperture: F6.3 (High f stop to provide wide depth of field).
ISO: 100 (Low ISO due to bright conditions).
Shutter speed: 1/100 (Fast shutter speed to prevent image distortion as a result of subject movement).

Lighting
Natural lighting (as shot outside studio lights could be implemented).

Equipment
-Tripod (to prevent camera shake and image distortion).
-Nikon D5300 and standard lens (no specialist lens required as the image will not be shot in macro or extreme wide angle.

Sequence- Work diary

Camera settings
Aperture: F6.3 (wide depth of field can be used as the subject of the image does not have ti be seperate from the images foreground).
Shutter speed: 1/125 (a fast shutter speed can be used in order to gain a crisper image as it takes an image before the subject can move).
ISO: 100 (a low ISO can be used to create a crisper image).

Lighting
-Natural lighting

Location
-Harlow town park.

Equipment
-Tripod (in order to reduce camera shake).
-Nikon D5300, standard lens (no specialist lens was required).

Shoot objective/obstacles
The objective of this shoot was to take a series of images which could be joined together in Photoshop in order to create an image which displays a sequence of actions.  This photography style is popular with sports photographers as well as surreal photographers.  Issues which I encountered with this shoot was the camera moving despite the use of a tripod as well as joining the images in Photoshop post shoot.

Favourite image

This is my favourite image due to the fact that the black and white tones used create a surreal element to the piece which is in keeping with the area of photography which I wish to pursue in my independent project.  I feel that the use of the same model also helps to add a surreal effect as it appears that there are multiple copies of her which creates a feeling of the supernatural and surreal.  I have heightened the images contrast as well it's saturation in order to create a higher sense of contrast throughout.

Least favourite image

This is my least favourite image due to the fact that I have only used two images to create this final image opposed to several layers which can be seen in other images in the series.  I also feel that the highly saturated colours as well as the location of a playground does not fit with the style of photography which I wish to pursue in the future.

Technique inclusion in project
I doubt that this technique will be incorporated into my project as I am unsure how I could incorporate this idea into the style of surreal portraiture which I wish to pursue.

Straight images- Macro photography

Macro- Technical post

Dictionary definition- Photography producing photographs of small items larger than life size.
Personal defintion- A form of photography which provides large amounts of detail at a close range as well as making an object appear larger than life.

Alessandro Zocchi

Camera settings
Aperture: F/8 (a wide depth of field can be used when taking a photo of something which exists wholly in the images foreground for example an eye as there is no need to blur out the images background).
Shutter speed: 1/125 (a fast shutter speed will prevent camera shake and image distortion).
ISO: 200 (an ISO of 200 can be used due to the high levels of studio lighting).

Lighting
-Studio light x2 (lights are used on either side of the object in order to gain a more even tone of light).
-Light diffuser (tracing paper) x2 (this is used to create a more even and concentrated tone of light).

Equipment
-Macro lens and studio camera (a macro lens provides a greater level of detail than a standard lens).
-Tripod/Camera stand (this is used to prevent camera shake as a small movement at the close camera range could cause a large amount of image distortion).

Wide angle, Close up- Technical post

Wide angle
Dictionary definition- In photography and cinematography, a wide-angle lens refers to a lens whose focal length is substantially smaller than the focal length of a normal lens for a given film plane.
Personal definition- an image taken with a wide angle lens with a focal length approximately 18 or lower which creates a wider image plane.

Close up
Dictionary definition- Photography of objects at a close range.
Personal defintion- Images taken with a short distance between the subject and the camera lens.

Wide angle close up- a wide angle close up image is a close up image taken with a wide angle lens which results in image distortion this is especially visible on the faces of humans or animals.

Explanation
The use of a wide angle camera setting at a close range can create an effect which alters the proportions of the subject in a way which is particularly noticeable in relation to the human face. The best results can be achieved with a lens 18mm or lower with the camera positioned roughly 20-30 cm from the subjects face.

Camera settings
Aperture: F5.6 (or lower for shallow depth of field to draw the viewers eye to the images subject).
ISO: 400 (dependent on lighting)
Shutter speed: 1/125 (a fast shutter speed will prevent the image from becoming distorted due to subject movement).

Lighting set up
-Natural lighting.

Equipment
-Tripod (to prevent image distortion as a result of camera shake).
-Nikon D5300 standard lens (a wider lens would have been preferable in order to better demonstrate the wide angle distorted effect).

Illustrated Project Proposal

My Personal investigation is:
To explore different areas of photography which fall into the genre of the surreal.

Surrealism: a 20th-century art form in which an artist or writer combines unrelated images or events in a very strange and dreamlike way.
Surreal: Beyond the real

Background research:
I have decided that I would like to complete roughly 2 series over a span of 10 shoots.  The first set of shoots will be focuses around the use of prosthetic makeup to create images which put a darker spin on popular idioms,  I have decided to undertake this shoot so that I can further explore my interest in portraiture photography as well as prosthetic makeup.

The second set of shoots that I am interested in focuses around the idea of telling someone's life story through the use of shots of flowers this interests me particularly due to my interest in Victorian flower language and the heavy symbolism that can be gained from certain flowers.

Research:
I plan to approach this project by carrying out 1 prosthetic look per shoot for the first 7 shoots as I feel that each look has potential to take up to an hour to create.  I will be documenting each of the processes through a series of images which I may form into animated GIFs if I feel that the result achieved will be desirable.  For the second series revolving around flowers I will be tackling 2-3 compositions per shoot as I feel that completing more than this number of compositions will result in a clumsy and poorly executed series.  Each shoot for the first 2 series will take place in the studio as I feel that this clean and controlled environment will be beneficial in my attempts to create clean and precise images.

Illustrations/Photographers
Below are some images which have influenced me throughout my research:

Series 1:

This image by Rachel Baran appeals to me because of the way that the artist has created a striking portrait through the combination of a look achieved through fx makeup (the honey) and computer manipulation (the bees).  I like the images composition due to the way that the subject has been shot from one side of the face opposed to head on and is only featured from the shoulders up as it allows for more focus to be on the subjects face as well as for her features to appear more striking.  The colour combination particularly the contrasting colours of red (the models lips and dress strap) and blue (the background) are also interesting as they add a sense of dimension to the image and make the model stand out from the background.

This image by Miss Lakune also interests me due to the way in which she has carried out an eye-catching shoot in a similar style to high fashion photography but has added a gruesome and surreal twist through the incorporation of fx makeup and prosthetics around the models eyes.  The use of colour in this image is interesting as the image has a very cold appearance due to the muted blue of the background, pale complexion of the model and the silver metal jewellery which serve to make the image appear less flat due to their reflective qualities.  The use of black lipstick and red blood also provide an interesting element of contrast to the image.

This image is interesting due to the fact that Elizaveta Porodina takes fashion photographs with a surreal twist (the above image was shot for Vogue Ukraine).  This is particularly interesting due to the fact that a subtle combination of glitter, body paint and computer manipulation have been used to create a striking image with an excellent contrast between the reds and pinks of the glitter and models lips against the blue of the body paint.

The above image by photographer TOMAAS is interesting to me due to the way in which it combines standard portraiture formatting similar to the work of Thomas Ruff and incorporates an Andy Warhol pop art colour scheme (which is how the series gained it's name "Candy Warhol").  This combination of contrasting colours (pink and blue), bold composition and props draw the viewer to the subject of the image create an interesting image.

Series 2

This image by Brooke Di Donato interests me due to the way that the flowers are the centre of the image and tell the story opposed to the model in the image who is in fact obscured from view by the flowers.  This image also uses a shallow depth of field in order to draw the viewers eye to the flowers at the images subject.  This effect is amplified by the fact that the photographer has positioned the brightest colours in the bouquet in order to the draw the viewers eye there.

This image by Oleg Oprisco interests me due to the way in which the model is hidden by the flowers.  I also like the numerous colours featured in the wall arrangement due to the fact that it creates an interesting muted contrast whilst complimenting the subjects fair complexion and red hair.  There is also a contrast present between the subject purple eyes and the flowers this draws the viewers eye to the model despite her being largely hidden from view by the flowers.

This image by Jose Romussi appeals to me because of the way in which the artist has incorporated flowers into the piece stitching them to the photograph in an example of physical photography.  The contrast between the harshness of the leather jacket and spikes with the flowers is interesting and the eye is drawn to the embroidery specifically due to the fact that the flowers have been embroidered using coloured thread and the image is in black and white.

Techniques
The techniques I intend to explore as part of the project are:
Macro photography, Animated Gif, Portrait photography, Photo joiner, and physical images.
